Smoking Cessation Treatments Covered by the National Health Insurance and Its Financial Impact

Abstract
Although smoking cessation is the No. 1 priority in clinical preventive services for the National Health Insurance (NHI), smoking cessation treatments have not been provided as a benefit by the NHI. Recently however, according to tobacco tax increase, there have been discussions on smoking cessation treatment covered by the NHI. Basic model of smoking cessation treatment must provide pharmacotherapy and counseling. Twelve week smoking cessation treatment costs are derived according to the type of medicine used. Thus, nicotine patch and varenicline treatments are estimated at 222,249 KRW and 366,812 KRW respectively. Annually five hundred and ninety thousand people will likely participate in treatment programs. In line with this figure, total expenditure of NHI is estimated at 47.3 billion KRW and 96.5 billion KRW.
